Dean Karnazes' book

I know that this group has already seen this post, but I wanted to put it out here for anybody else that might be watching the blog.

Some insightful passages from a book I just finished. Ultramarathon man: Confessions of an all-night runner by Dean Karnazes. He’s one of the top ultrarunners in the country if not world. He’s finished 200 mile races solo, run 123 miles through the desert in California, 100 miles through the mountains, 26 miles to the South Pole, and recently 350 miles without sleep. He routinely runs through the night and sometimes runs for 100 miles before a race, timing it so he gets to the start of a marathon minutes before and then runs the marathon at a respectable time (3:15)! He’s embarking on another trial in September at the race I’m running in St. Charles. He’s going to complete 50 marathons in all 50 states in 50 consecutive days. That’s a total of around 1300 miles in 50 days! He’s truly amazing and I couldn’t put the book down. I would suggest it as a good read for anybody, runners and non-runners. These quotes don’t ruin anything in the book, but if you don’t read the book at least you will have seen these parts. People think I’m crazy to put myself through such torture, though I would argue otherwise. Somewhere along the line we seem to have confused comfort with happiness. I’ve now come to believe that quite the opposite is the case. Dostoyevsky had it right: “Suffering is the sole origin of consciousness.” Never are my senses more engaged than when the pain sets in. There is magic in misery. Just ask any runner.

S3 in Washington Park...no problem


Great run tonight! I know it was hard. I was and still am feeling it too. But Dave is right, you will definitely improve from that. Here's the update from the GPS.

Next Tues Aug. 1st and Friday Aug. 4th

Well the plan for next Tues. is to venture to Chatham and park next to the post office b/t 545 and 6pm. It is right next to the hucks in Chatham. You can turn into the parking lot thier by the Alamo and just go around the back. We will run the Chatham trail which is mostly a flat out and back course. Should be around 5.5 to 6 miles.... Then Becky has invited S3 over to Swim, cookout, and relax a lil! So we will all need to bring a lil something for food and Swimsuits!!! Bill said he thought about skinny dippn but its up to you... Leave a comment on what you want to bring. Remember we will have ran so it doesnt need to be that healthy! as long as we get good carbs and protiens :) HAHA. You can bring your choice of adult beverages as they have been called and I will prob bring some chips and cookies. Anyother question feel free to call me or leave a comment. Thanks Becky!!


Next S3 social is set for Friday Aug. 4 at Sammy's Sports Bar at 530ish downtown!! we will eat and drink there and see were the night takes us!!! Good way to start the weekend as long as we get a good run in Sat. or Sun

Tues Night 7/25 Plan B

Not real sure if everyone got the Email from Linda saying we arent allowed at the Fairgrouds this Tues. and that Parking is goin to be limited at Lincoln Park due to construction. I know this is late notice but i was thinking that maybe we can meet up at Washington Park around 530 - 545 at the playgroup again and at least have the hills there. I know that is a little closer for most people at it should be easier for parking and such. However it also is short notice, so if that sounds like a good idea give my phone a call (725-6999) at lets try to plan on that. Or you can post a comment here or email and say give your thoughts. I will post again around noon tomorrow and email a confirmation of where we are meeting...

what heat wave????


Great job last night for those who could make it!!! It was a hot night, but we had a good run even with the heat. I was expecting our times to fall off more but as you can see from the screenshot our average time was still only 10:30 /mile. I stopped the clock at the cemetery, but left it running when we stopped at my car. My car would have been about 1.4 miles and about 2.5 miles. Any time you are out in heat like that just make sure to have cold water and to stop every so often. Even if you don't want to stop, you need to let your body cool down. Pouring water over your head, and pressing a cold bottle against your carotid artery (in your neck) are good ways to bring your internal temp down.

Just make sure you don't overdo it this week. It should be hot until Saturday. They are forecasting highs in the 70's for Sat. It will be a great day to do the 6-6.5 miles.

Just a reminder, there are groups that meet at the grandstand to run the abes amble course on saturdays at 7 am. I know we haven't done the whole course, but you've seen most of it and that is a great way to get your long run in. There are also lots of people that meet at Panera on the west side. They start at 7, 7:30 and 8 I think. I've not run there, but I've been told that there are a wide range of runners with different paces that run there.

For those of you who couldn't make it, we are going to meet at Lincoln Park next week. We'll meet at the shelter on the west side (close to the cemetery) where they had everybody meet for the first Abes Army night. We'll start there and run into the cemetery doing the loop that goes around the monuments and then probably back into the park to get the rest of the miles. Whatever the route, you're going to see the rest of the course. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and it won't be so hot.

This weeks run

Hopefully you all got your weekend runs in before it got too hot. It was certainly a scorcher. I know its going to be hot tomorrow, so I think I'll try and place my car over by the cemetery stocked with bottles of water in a cooler. We should be running through the park past the people with the water, so if I can put mine over by the entrance to the cemetery we should be in good shape for all the parts of our course.

S3 Social!!

It was a great night out and those of you who couldn't make it really missed out. Dave (Drennan) was dancing on tables and Becky was singing songs for us all. Really though, it was a good time out and I wish I had thought to bring a camera. Maybe next time. Start thinking about what we want to do next. We've only got about 5 weeks left after which our official reason to meet every week will evaporate.

Route for next week?

I know we just ran, but I was thinking that we need to get over there and see the other part of the course a little bit. I've got a suggestion for next weeks route. You can mull it over and let us know what you think next week.

Great Run!!

Great run tonight, even with the humidity! Just wanted to give you an update on the GPS. It worked pretty well. I think with a little tweaking and some more playing it will be even more useful. This model has a PC interface and you can get software to get the data from the GPS. I'll try to put some pictures on here to show you what it will do. Pretty cool though. I got it on ebay as a factory reconditioned unit for $84 including shipping.

TRACK WORKOUT Weds 7/12

......Sizzling Mile only a week away from this Wednesday, I thought we should run shorter distances. So I thought we would go with a 5 minute run then walk 100 meters or so, then keep decreasing the run time by 1 minute. Between each run walk/stop by the nearest 100 meter mark, and let's have runs of 5, 4, 3, 2, and even 1 minute runs. Try to stay smooth or go hard for a section or more. After that we may do a little more. Not sure yet, but be prepared.

Well its time to cut loose a lil so this Thurs the 13th we will meet at X-?milco "spelling" over off Iles by Office Max between 730pm-8pm!! Hope you all can make it should be a good time!!! Update from AR

Hope the WDF went well. I know it was well attended from the blog posting on the Abes Army site. It was a hot weekend for me down in Batesville, AR. We went down for my grandparents' 60th wedding anniversary party. I found out what it was like running real hills! I got up for a Sunday morning run (not early enough though, it felt like 80 already at 8 am). I had planned on running 6 miles but soon changed my mind. That part of Arkansas is pretty hilly and I'd forgotten what the roads were like around the hotel we were staying at. Man, they just go on forever! I got to the top of a hill and found out it was only a short plateau before rising some more. Anyway, with the temperature and high humidity it quickly got cut short to a 40 min hill workout over an undetermined distance.

Hope the running has been going good! If things went well you should have done 5.5 miles this weekend I think. Keep at it and I'll see you tomorrow night. By then I should have my GPS watch!!!

By the way, I wanted to share some articles from the most recent Runners World issue. Both are on hydration in the summer heat. Worthwhile reading!!!

TRACK WORKOUT and FUN for JULY 5th

Since there are alot of races goin on today and coming up this week at the track will be easy, and then afterwards we are all walking to the nearby pub. I am posting the info below!

Hello everyone -
After several YEARS of discussing going to Boone's on a Wednesday, guess what??? We actually are this week!! I have the beer garden reserved for us around 6:30 pm - July 5. Since many of us are racing tomorrow, the work-out on Wednesday will be easier. We will do 400's with a 100 meter recovery walk for ____ minutes (Jack - please fill in). If you are racing on the Fourth of July, take it easy on Wednesday. This is a big week with the Fourth of July races and then Women's Distance Festival on Saturday. If you are new to racing, the Women's Distance Festival would be an excellent first race. Tons of men come out to cheer and help, and it is a really great race.

TUES. JULY 4th

HOWDY EVERYONE!!! Sorry it's taken me so long to post up here, its been a rather busy week and to add to that I was sick for the past 4days. Just wanted to give everyone the reminder we will be meeting at Washington Park at 10am Tues. morning! We will meet up at the shelter by the Playground area, which is atop the hill by the tennis courts. If you can't make it try to get a 30-40min run/walk in and enjoy your 4th of July.
